They say first impressions are everything, but your effort to make a good impression doesn’t end there. You need to continue to be your best self and show up consistently, and that applies both at work and in the outside world.
Chances are you’ve had whirlwind first dates, danced through the honeymoon period, and then it’s all gone downhill. They get too comfortable, stop trying to impress you, and those qualities you fell for start to disappear.
The people you look forward to spending time with most, are the ones who continue to leave a lasting impression, they light up a room and give you their all in conversation, work and socialising.
Be memorable and become infectious with these quick tips:
Give a sh!t
Whatever you do, do it with passion. I’m a big believer in giving people and work all of my energy and I’m incredibly enthusiastic about what I love.
I keep positive and give it my all to uplift the mood when others aren’t at their best or things haven’t gone to plan.
Those that know me IRL, will know me as the NORTH hype man, I give a sh!t about our agency and all of the people that make it incredible and will continuously shout from the rooftops.
Be in the conversation
There’s nothing worse than talking to a disinterested listener. I hate it when you can tell that someone isn’t listening, doesn’t want to listen, or they’re planning what to say next.
Your face says it all, so does your body language. Be positive, give listening signals like a smile or head nod, make eye contact, and repeat key points back to the speaker.
Don’t just jump straight into a completely different topic when it’s your turn to speak. Take a genuine interest in what the speaker has to say and you’ll get so much more from your conversations, and build much stronger connections.
Don’t hold back, be honest and vulnerable. Share your experiences and failures, not just your successes, and most importantly remember to talk less, and listen more.
Bring others up!
Become a cheerleader for your friends and colleagues. A small big up can mean so much to someone, make their week, and give them the confidence to keep going!
Be an advocate and shout about people’s success on social media, in conversations with others, on Slack channels, and WhatsApp groups.
If you want to go the extra mile, offer a helping hand, especially if you know they’re struggling. Don’t be greedy and closed off and share as much knowledge as you can.
Show face
Don’t you just hate it when that person never replies to your messages, and makes up excuses time after time for not meeting up with you.
This tip is easy, just remember to show your face. In your personal life turn up to birthdays, dinner parties, and big life events, reply to text messages and WhatsApp groups. And at work, get into the office now and then, put your camera on in virtual calls, show up for meetings, get involved in the Slack chat, and join the work socials once in a while.
Play a higher card
We had some excellent communication training from Brad Waldron recently, and his idea of playing a higher card really stuck with me. It’s something that I was already doing subconsciously, but this is an excellent way to visualise it.
Take a deck of cards starting at a 2, all the way up to an Ace at the very top. The card you choose to play determines the amount of energy you put into a conversation/ moment. A higher play means more enthusiasm, open body language, nodding, smiling, lots of energy.
Start playing a higher card!
Say no to ‘quiet quitting’ and quit coasting
I’ve noticed a growing trend for ‘quiet quitting’, spearheaded by the TikTok generation, and It’s something I really can’t get on board with for a number of reasons.
The phrase was coined to describe when workers only do the job they’re being paid to do, without taking on any extra duties, or participating in extracurriculars at work.
If you have aspirations and a vision of where you want to be, then you need to work hard to get there. Promotions don’t come easy, and you can’t expect to put in the bare minimum amount of effort and just get handed a new role.
If you want to coast along, then you do you. But if you’re aiming higher, get involved with every great opportunity thrown your way.
Remember, you only get back what you put in. Be the best version of you and you'll create an infectious energy.
